Avoid Gaining Weight | Tips to Avoid Gaining Weight at Halloween

Halloween is upon us! While it’s fine to enjoy a healthy treat, Americans gain more weight over the holidays than any other time of the year because sugar is addictive. This is how I avoid gaining weight as I see the day approaching. I start by making a decision to not let candy destroy my mood and my goals by putting myself in a state of “junk food stress”. 

Do you feel like you’ve been gaining and losing weight constantly? If I feel under pressure to give out candy to the kids I may get some kind of hard candy that I know will not tempt me and choose to keep anything chocolate off my grocery list to avoid gaining weight.  You see, you can strengthen your resolve to keep your sugar intake low as the holiday season is approaching, especially if your past holidays made you gain weight and regret it later.

Start now by setting your mind on the Lord for strength and guidance and consider making something for yourself using wholesome ingredients. I like making my favorite pecan date bars when I feel like eating a treat to take the edge off.  Pick your favorite healthy recipe that is just enough to satisfy your sweet tooth and put them away for a time when you’ll really enjoy it. This will help you to lose weight even if you’ve gained weight.

Avoid Weight Gain By Planning Ahead

Halloween is sort of the holiday season where food (junk food) in this case is the focus. The good news is there is time to prepare and plan ahead to avoid gaining weight. Little changes can make a big impact, like drinking more water every day or adding a walk or swim to your schedule several days a week. 

You might already be aware of this but, medical weight loss experts often recommend more movement like a very brisk walk during which you are not jogging but you cannot talk or read – walking the dog for an extra mile can make it count.  Work up to walking 2 miles in 20 minutes. If you have physical problems walking, try cardio exercises in a chair or running in water at your local pool is a great alternative exercise for weight loss or maintenance. There’s no time like the present to incorporate a few good habits to keep your mind off of the junk. 

7 Tips to Avoid Gaining Weight at Halloween

Is Halloween becoming a scary nightmare? Are you afraid of the constant temptations when candy is staring at you in the face and you thinking of more weight gain? Consider these tips so that you can enjoy the fun of children, the harvest and simple joy of Halloween.  
  • Buy the candy as close to Halloween as possible — you can’t eat it if you don’t have it in the house!
  • Add some savory herbal teas to your diet leading up to Halloween. Teas that have no caffeine or sugar, yet satisfy your taste buds help curb sugar cravings. Consider trying cinnamon, Rooibos (red), licorice root, or chamomile tea. Ask God to bless you with the willingness to drink herbal tea.
  • Step away from the candy bowl! Keep the bowl out of reach, even on Halloween night, even if you have to go get it in the closet every time someone comes by. Out of sight, out of mind.
  • Buy candy that you don’t like. If you like chocolate, get lollipops. If you like starbursts, get sweet tarts (you get the idea). Or skip the candy altogether and get non-food treats like glow sticks, temporary tattoos, or stickers.
  • Don’t buy too much. Limit the number of children out for Halloween, so do you really need 5 bags of candy? Ask God to bless you with the willingness to not buy too much. 
  • Give it all away! If the number of trick-or-treaters that come to your house starts to wind down and you have a lot of candy left, start doubling the amount of candy you are giving out. Get rid of it! If there are leftovers, throw it away, bring them to the office or donate it to a kids program. 
  • Have a healthy lunch and dinner. Be sure to eat a healthy, satisfying high-protein lunch and dinner to fill you up so you’re not mindlessly grabbing whatever you can get your hands on. It makes it especially hard to resist if you’re hungry and have not eaten enough food to nourish your body.  Consider batch cooking for the week or cooking extra the night before so you can just heat something up. SIMPLY THINK AHEAD!
