Have you been wondering how to stop addiction to sugar and junk food and feel you might be ready to surrender it all to God? If so I know you will get a lot out of this message and find some really helpful take-a-ways that you can start doing today. Our struggle with food and not being able to maintain a healthy way of eating points to the fact that we live with addictive behaviors and mindsets. An addictive behavior is a habit that’s gone wild or something you can’t do without. We can get addicted to just about anything, from sugar, chips, cheese, alcohol, cigarettes, coffee and diet pills and yes junk food.. People can also be addicted to pornography, hoarding, gambling, and exercise. Then there are addictions to behaviors and mindsets like worrying, being a people pleaser or the need to be good enough and approved by others. We need to accept that we cannot control the thinking and behavior of any person other than ourselves. Sure, we can set healthy boundaries around the behavior of others to protect them and ourselves, but we cannot control their choices. They will think what they think and do what they do and there is nothing we can do about it. So one of the ways we gain victory is to accept that we can control our own thinking when we seek God's direction. In this life, all that we really have control over is ourselves. The only thing we can change is ourselves. And much of the time, the easiest thing to change about ourselves is our attitude toward the choices we make, especially when we begin to base our choices on how God lived his life of sacrifice and humility to show us how deeply he loves us. So another way we will change is by talking to God and confessing our poor attitude and asking him to bless us in a way that is pleasing to him. Prayer will lead us to stop sugar addiction through the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit who imparts wisdom inside of us. To do this, we need to surrender to our lack of control over people, places, things, and situations that upset us. When we do this we are more equipped to surrender our junk food to him. We must learn that because we are Christians, we need to place more value on peace and serenity than on being right and having everything in life to be just the way we want it. If we value the life God blessed us with, we must learn to surrender—not to the food and sugar addiction itself, but to the fact that we admit that we have addictions to food and we need to deal with it on a daily basis to keep it from destroying our lives. It all begins by identifying the underlying mindset that keeps us from giving up our physical (addictions) and our self beliefs that food is gonna make anything in life better. So another way to gain victory to not lose sight of our underlying mindsets and lead us away into our destructive behaviors. What mindsets you might be asking…well these mindsets are what my coaching is all about and I have a whole list of them that we can identify and watch God change them based on biblical principles. Surrendering to these realities—these facts of life—is necessary to both short-term and long-term sobriety, peace of mind and healing. Without our full and willing (though possibly grudging) acceptance of these realities, we are considerably more likely to be miserable both physically and mentally. Why? Because we choose to be selfish and our mind is set to stay in a place of our own will before choosing to live according to the will of God. Remember God is a God of sowing and reaping. When you choose to sow into good soil, your life will produce good fruit, the fruit of the spirit. Unfortunately until we are willing to look at reality, we keep sowing into poor unhealthy soil. Galatians 6:8 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Having self-control means God has given us the ability to control ourselves. We can discipline ourselves to do what we know we should do, even when we don't feel like it or want to do it. But we have to stop saying things like, "I can't control myself. I just can't help it, I just love my donuts – it's my problem, I know, but I don’t care." Well guess who cares? God! Because God's Spirit abides in us, as born again believers in Jesus Christ, we can confidently listen to his word and say, "I have self-control, and I can do whatever I need to do through Christ who strengthens me!" God I praise you for showing me your wisdom. May your thoughts come into my heart today so I can have a closer walk with you. I realize it's not always easy. When I wanted to quit smoking, it was hard to do, and I had to start over several times before I made it. But through it all, I learned that anytime we're willing to do what's right and we depend on God, His grace is activated in our lives to do it. We just can't give up! For anyone who feels that they are addicted to sugar and junk food, of course, surrender is difficult. In fact, it’s only by our unwillingness to surrender to reality and address our problems that kept us living in active addiction despite the endless consequences we face. That’s where fellowship helps and encourages us to stay on course. People need people… If we want the freedom He promises in His Word, then we need to set aside time to study the Word and spend time with Him. Many times we fail because we're trying to do what we need to do in our own strength, leaving God out of the loop. But we have to stop trying and start depending on God for everything. So don't try to do anything without praying this prayer today, "God, I can't do this without You. Help me. I need You." Authentic living, as described in Titus 2:11-12, is a way of life that is grounded in the grace of God and actively seeks to live according to His will. It is a lifestyle that is marked by humility, self-control, and godliness. This type of living acknowledges the love and mercy of Jesus Christ and allows these truths to shape every aspect of your life. To live more like Jesus, we need to first focus on developing His mindset as described in Philippians 2:5-8. This passage encourages us to have the same attitude as Christ, who humbled Himself and became obedient to our heavenly Father, even to the point of being nailed on a cross. This involves a word we all love. Humility, which is not to be confused with the word humiliation, as in you’re letting people bring you shame. Humility means putting others before ourselves and always asking God to see what he wants to teach us in all circumstances, just as Jesus did when He willingly sacrificed His life for our salvation. As Christians we have a choice to praise God through the practice of a sacrifice of praise. “Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God and keep your vows you made to the Most High. Then call upon Me when you are in trouble and I will rescue you and you will give Me glory.” Psalm 50: 14-15 This is a PROMISE FROM GOD. Remember, there's nothing more valuable to you than your personal relationship with God and the time you spend with Him. Put Him first and you'll find that the power of God's Word will always prevail over the messes in your life. You don't have to settle for a life in food bondage or to any addiction, because in Christ, you can do it! Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Prayer from psalm 143:10 Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness. So let me ask you? Are you ready to start sowing into GOOD SOIL? Are you willing to start depending on living according to God’s word and (not by depending on fleshly desires) more like Jesus by practicing to live life described in Titus 2:11-12, is a way of life that is grounded in the grace of God and actively seeks to live according to His will.
